Hello and happy new year! This is my first post of the year and it is an emulsified sugar scrub. Normally adding sugar/salt/jojoba beads etc to a good carrier oil/honey (which by the way I love) is good enough for a proper and effective exfoliation, however it tends to be messy, tacky and difficult to pack as gifts or presents. Emulsified scrub on the other hand is prefect, because it will not leak,it is less messy and easily washes off under the shower without leaving behind any oil residue.
Emulsification simply means the combination of water and oil/butter with the help of emulsifiers. The amazing thing about this particular recipe(originally from soapqueen.com) is that it is a moisturising lotion because it contains oils and butter, a cleanser because it contains natural liquid soap and obviously a scrub so it is a 3 in one scrub.
I have modified this recipe by adding a pink clay and infusing my sweet almond oil with dried rose buds and petals.
Original Recipe (Soap queen.com)
1.9 oz Sweet Almond Oil
.6 oz Stearic Acid
1.2 oz Emulsifying Wax
.7 oz Beeswax
1 oz Mango Butter
3 oz Distilled water
3 oz Natural Liquid Soap
.1 oz Phenonip ( The addition of a preservative is very important because the recipe contains water)
.1 oz Scent
21-28 oz Fine Ground Sugar
Modified Recipe With:
Dried Rose Petals Infused Sweet Almond Oil (double infusion). This means I infused for two months, however after a month I changed the rose petals to new dried rose petals.
1 teaspoon Australian Pink Mud. Because it is a non drying clay and it stimulates the skin leaving a soft beautiful glow.
10 Drops Rose Geranium Essential Oil
What You Will Need
2) Combine the water + liquid soap. Heat in a microwave or double boiler and set aside.
3) Combine the oil + butter. Heat in a microwave or double boiler.
4) When both the oil/butter and the water/liquid soap have reached about the same temperature of 167-176 fahrenheit or 75-80 centigrade. Pour the oil into the water and mix with a spoon for about 2 minutes.
After 2 minutes, change the spoon to a stick blender or a milk frother and blend for 5 minutes. This is the stage I added my pink clay and it blended seamlessly.
Once the mixture is thick and cool enough, add the fragrance oil/rose geranium and preservative.
Add the sugar and mix with a spoon and spatula. Although the recipe says to use 21 to 28oz of sugar, I used only 20oz and that’s just a personal preference.
That is it!, your emulsified sugar scrub is ready to be used, just pour into a plastic or glass jar. You can put this in the shower with the lid on because it contains a preservative if not then you can just put in the fridge and try to use within a few weeks. I love this body scrub so much, it does not only exfoliate but it moisturises and rinses off so easily. I use it on days I don’t intend to use soap.
