Dryness is a major thing that I deal with everyday and I think most people with my hair texture can relate. My hair is very coily (4c) and so all the natural oil that is supposed to travel from my scalp to the shaft/tip of my hair is unable to due to the shape of the strands, and this is the major cause of the dryness.
I don’t have any scientific knowledge on hair at all, but what I know for a fact is that dryness leads to breakage and this means you are unable to retain length and hair feels brittle and lifeless. I have learnt that there is nothing you can do about your natural hair texture except learn how to make it more manageable, love it and accept it. However one thing that has really helped me with the manageability of my hair is the use of the L.O.C method, what this means is LIQUID.OIL.CREAM in that order or a modified way you choose to do it.
LIQUID: Water/Leave-in-conditioner. This is the main source of moisture.
OIL: Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Argan Oil, Hemp Oil, Avocado Oil, Almond Oil,etc. This will lock the moisture into the hair by trapping the water before it all dries up.
CREAM: Homemade Shea Butter Mix, Raw Shea Butter, Lush R&B Hair Moisturiser, etc. This seals in the water and the oil.
HOW TO
- Wet hair with water preferably in a spray bottle, however if you are not too keen on wetting down your hair with water, then use a leave-in-conditioner with aqua(water) as the first ingredient. Some leave-in-conditioners are actually in liquid form and can be used as well. I personally like to dampen my hair with water then use a leave-in that is very thick and creamy but it is just a matter of preference it’s either one or both.
- Apply your oil of choice after the leave-in to lock in the moisture from the water. I would normally go for a light oil when I use both water and leave-in like coconut oil or argan oil, however if I use either one of it then I will prefer an oil like castor oil or hemp seed oil just because I think they are a little heavy.
- The cream is the third and last and this could be whatever you like and what your hair loves. I use either raw Shea butter or my butter mix and one product that is a staple of mine is lush r&b hair moisturizer. After this, my hair is so soft and more manageable and really easy to style.
