I love mixing and blending oils and seeing what works and doesn’t for my skin and hair. I came across infusing oils with vanilla pods and coffee very recently, I wonder why I never thought of that though, anyway it caught my attention and I decided to infuse some Madagascan vanilla pods in sweet almond oil and sunflower oil. I did this over a period of two to three weeks but you can just heat up the oil and pods for a few minutes, allow to rest for a while and your infused oil is ready or you could actually infuse for a period of 4 to 6 weeks, which is what am doing right now. It all a personal choice.
To Infuse;
I got a bottle, added the vanilla pods, poured in my oil and kept it in my kitchen cabinet for two to three weeks. This oil infusion inspired my hair serum, since the idea was to blend the vanilla oil with other oils for a sealant, I decided to add a little bit of cyclomethicone, so it became a serum.
Hair Serum is a silicone based, amino acids and ceramide, they act as a protective mask to hair and mask. It keeps the hair and scalp from dandruff and fungal infection.
It also prevents hair loss and makes styling easy. The cyclomethicone makes ingredients like glycerine and honey less tacky. It gives shine and strength and smoothes dry, rough hair strands.
These are what you will need:
Madagascan Vanilla Infused Sunflower Oil;
Sunflower oil is mostly used for cooking , it is a light oil that easily absorbs into the skin and hair. It is rich in vitamins A, B, C and E, minerals like iron, potassium and calcium, which are all essential for a healthy hair and skin. It also contains omega 9 acids that can stimulate natural hair growth and also used in preventing brittle hair and reduces hair loss.
It is a conditioning and smoothing hair oil because it is rich in vitamin E and it helps in creating a Shinier and stronger hair strands.
Madagascan Vanilla Infused Sweet Almond Oil;
Almond oil is full of polyunsaturated and mono fatty acids, vitamin E, D, B1, B2, and A. and this allows for strong healthy hair strands. Almond oil is a source of magnesium which helps in preventing hair fall
Castor Oil;
This is a very thick glossy oil and actually it is a personal favorite of mine because it helps in deep conditioning my very dry strands.
Castor Oil contains ricinoleic acid and omega 6 essential fatty acids which helps in circulating blood to the scalp and increases hair growth. It is very nourishing to the hair and scalp because of its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal content. One of my favorite way of using castor is to apply it to my hair when it is still damp and before styling, it locks down moisture on my hair and leaves it really soft and manageable.
Hemp Oil;
This is oil is packed with anti-oxidants, omega 6 fatty acids and proteins. It has regenerative and healing properties.
Cyclomethicone (2ml for my 250ml bottle);
This is a light weight, oil soluble silicone. It evaporates and so does not cause any build up on the hair and scalp. It gives a silky, dry, smooth finish and allows oils to penetrate deep into the skin and/or hair.
Vitamin E Oil
Rose Buds (Optional)
Essential Oil (Optional)
Pump Bottle
Small Funnel
This is a very easy recipe to make because it is a non-aqueous serum that means its does not include water so it is just oils and cyclomethicone. I eyeball the measurement making sweet almond oil 50% of the whole recipe.
How To Use
- Apply to hair after shampoo as a conditioner and a sealant.
- Apply on curly and fizzy hair for styling ease and to create smooth and sleek style.
- Take a little amount and apply to damp hair and let it dry and style.
- Use it to protect the hair from blow drying heat, styling tools and humidity.
- It can be used on dry hair to give it shine and a healthy look.
